[wp-hackers] Override single WordPress pages

Oh yeah... I use this all the time.  This is my custom permalink recipe:

/%category%/%post_id%/%postname%/

You can leave off the postname part and still get to the article. The  
slug is not needed for look up because the id is in the url.
