[wp-hackers] Why WP mantain old post slug?

A user asked me why even after chamging a post slufg the old one vas
still searchable and the old url still active redirectong to new post.

Checking i noticed that old post slug is saved on wp_postmeta table
using wp_old_slug" as key for the meta_key column. Why these data is
mantained? For what aim?

Toi avoid having old slug still "active" the only solution was to
deleta the row idirectly in the database.
