But in the end, you are storing a URL. The simplest, most meaningful
and vastly most common use of this feature is for displaying links in
your sidebar or on a separate links page. Despite your insistence
that there are a myriad of other uses, I have yet to hear any of them,
much less one that will be useful to 99% of WP users.
I believe that we should call this feature "Links" to reduce the
confusion of WP users (all the new/non-bloggers that I've installed it
for have been confused by the term "blogroll"). That should be the
core because that will be the only feature that will be useful to 99%
of users.
People who want to expand upon that can feel free to do so. If you
need more hooks in the API, write them up and try to get them into the
core. If you come up with really cool functionality ontop of those
hooks that a majority of people will find useful, I'm sure you'll be
able to get that into the core too.
