I know you mean that HTML disallows the minimized syntax for empty elements
(since the regular form also uses a solidus in the closing tag), but "<br
/>" validates fine for HTML Transitional.

If you're not the type that requires that your document be perfectly valid
in order to sleep at night (I tend to think of validators as more of helper
tool than a gateway), the minimized form is also 100% reliable even if your
DOCTYPE is HTML Strict, AFAIK.
