Good point.

Here's an idea...  Add some code to the WP-update function so that  
when it runs, the person gets a screen that says:

"Please help out WordPress development by giving us a bit of  
information about how your server is set up.  This is completely  
anonymous, and will only send us information regarding what types and  
versions of software is running on your web server (such as PHP,  
MySQL, and Apache)."

The page has two buttons: "Yes, send information" or "No, don't send  
information".

Might be useful if this is a regularly repeated discussion.
