It'd be easy to change the form. I worked it over a few months ago and added
hooks galore to the thing. You should be able to pretty much anything with
it.

Example plugin:

Then it's just a matter of intercepting the field's submission (there's a
hook for that) and using it to create a new user account. However, it
doesn't there's any place to hook in and change the password to what the
user specified, either in wp-login.php (where the password is generated) or
in wp_insert_user() where the account is actually created.

I'll go make a ticket. :)
