This might help me if you can answer this:

Can --ignore-externals be fine tuned in some way to skip just one
external source?

Computer Guru wrote that he does his whole site, not just WP with
externals "I have WP via SVN, Gallery2, several small scripts, and
most importantly, our own home-brew site (design and backend, which
power our downloads and research sections)."

If he does ignore-externals, then his gallery2, small scripts and his
whole home-brew site will not be updated (along with Akismet). I have
a similar situation here-- where WP is just part of a much larger site
that is pulled in externally. Using --ignore-externals does update WP,
but it means ignoring the rest of my site's updates too and
essentially ONLY updating WP...

For a site that is only WP, the ignore opt works fine
