You can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars doing this, as you can
hiring programmers to write code; but can also do it on the cheap.
You'll get a lot of benefit just by roping in a few non-techie
friends/family members. watching even one user struggle with your
software can radically change how you think about it, and approach its
design.
The next time your mother/brother/significant other/next door
neighbor/dentist/etc. asks you to come over to fix their network/degunk
their system/disinfect Windows etc. say sure, but they have to agree to
be your guinea pig on some user testing for the same amount of time.
