Can you turn on the debug output for that plugin by un-commenting the
$output row towards the bottom and commenting out the other line? Also
does the query diagnostics plugin give you the actual query? Try
running an EXPLAIN on it if you can like Matt's post earlier in the
thread.
Where was the call to get_recent_comments placed?
