[wp-forums] Child Theme query

Now that I have some coffee intake, I can reply. :)

There really is no definitive, right or wrong answer here. There are
appropriate use cases for both a Child Theme and a Forked (derivative)
Theme, depending on intended use of the new Theme, the intended end user of
the new Theme, the development comfort level of the person developing the
new Theme, and the life cycle of the original/Parent Theme.

While there are some general principles (e.g. the more novice the
developer, or the more simple the derivative from the original, the more
likely a Child Theme is the better approach), it's really a question that
must be answered on a case-by-case basis.
