I'm no expert at this but I think I see the problem. While the site and
home urls are now correctly set to the www subdomain, there are embedded
link references in the DB content containing the shingle subdomain that
need to be found and changed. I posted instructions to this effect in the
thread.
My background question is how and where did the WordPress installation pick
up the wrong subdomain? The server is behind a reverse proxy, but WordPress
is installed behind these all the time, yes? The user invoked the install
script using the www subdomain (he claims), yet content ended up with
shingle subdomain references.

set up. So far he can only access the site or wp-admin (but not both)
depending upon what site url he is using.
I'm not sure he's ever going to get this to work but perhaps someone
with more server-admin experience could suggest a solution?
