[wp-forums] Email address on new account

Can anyone explain this:

tl;dr: user wants to create new forum account. Changed email address in 
existing account to a throwaway address but still cannot use old address 
to register a new account.

I've run a search and the email address is not being used by any other 
user. So why is an "Email already exists" message being generated?
