I think it's just an unfortunate result of WP's increasing popularity. 
The greater the sheer number of users and forum posters, the more idiots 
you'll get.

This is based on the principle that 1 in every 100 people that you 
encounter will be someone who instantly gets on your wrong side (and 
vice versa) and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.
