Quick update. The OP's host  was 1 & 1 who do run PHP4/5 in tandem. The 
fix for this host was to add:

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php

to an .htaccess file at the domain root. This might come in useful in 
other similar topics.
