[wp-forums] self-linking rules?

I hope it's okay.  I've done that from time to time with specific posts of mine, such as step by step WP installs and upgrades, and also a post about how to use a particularly troublesome plugin. But not because I deliberately wanted to drive traffic to my site (after all, my site is listed in my profile), but because I'm too lazy to cut and paste the article.  

Hope this isn't a no-no.

Are there codified or generally agreed-to rules for self-linking in posts? Is it OK to link to your own site for an article to help someone in the forums? Or no?
