Closing could be an idea.  I suppose what has to be balanced up is -

Legitimate users wanting to show off their stuff
Spammers and SEO leeches abusing the forum
Will closing / removing the forum simply push all this elsewhere

Another alternative to closing etc. would be to put up a sticky giving 
some ground rules and start moderating the area like crazy to keep it 
clean.

I guess if it were closed to new posts and there was a backlash it 
wouldn't be difficult to re-open.
