I think what's been said would be true of my own opinion, usually if
someone asks to be a mod, they're the kind of people that shouldn't be.
Not saying it's always going to be the case, but usually if someone asks
for something, there's a motive driving the question.
There are a few members i've been eyeing up as potential candidates
should the need arise to have more(not that i'd go about changing
anyone's status without consulting first - can't specifically say who,
but i know i've repeatedly seen particular users provide wonderful
levels of help and never ask for anything in return, they have a genuine
willingness to help), but for now i think the work load in dealing with
spam and keeping users inline with the forum rules (etc etc..) seems to
be evenly spread, some days i do very little in terms of moderating
because you lovely people have done it all already.
The modlook page for example rarely seems to have anything, apart from
the occasional post here and there, which i believe goes to show there
is a sufficient number of members performing forum moderation, same can
be said for the Akismet spam queue on some days.
I think introducing moderators by appointment is a good system. If we
outline a set of guidelines for becoming moderators then i can't help
but feel it would become some form of scoring system that users would
start aiming for, my thinking here falls in line with those rating/karma
systems where users are rated/scored based on the help they provide.
I've seen such systems abused and misued so many times in other
communities and really feel outlining a procedure for becoming a
moderator would only introduce a system where by people no longer help
because they genuinely want to help but because they are going for gold
(the gold being receiving the moderator status).
Just my 0.02 ... ;)
