I've deleted posts in the .org forums before. But only when it was a very
good reason from the person themself and when doing so would not ruin a
thread. Several IIRC were things like real name being used, company name
mentioned, they realised their post wasn't quite how they would like it to
be the next day - that sort of thing. It didn't happen a lot at all.
Accounts? No. I just checked the .com forums and the backend has no delete
account button. The DB would be the place to go for that - but then blocking
does the job too.
Regarding the blank in the .org, when the switch from minibb to bbpress
happened there could have been damage then. Certainly many threads lost
their first post which is why some old threads will look very weird. The
username problem could also be associated with that.
I think each call is a judgement one that is made discreetly. As soon as
people get wind of the fact they can go nuts on Monday and have it tidily
cleaned up Tuesday then they will start going nuts. It will create a problem
where maybe there is almost none. Even though things could be undone, the
illusion that words typed are there for a long time is something that should
not be shattered IMO.
