[wp-forums] Forums above posts.

Isn't there a way then, where we could highlight ONLY posts like stickies on
the front page, even if it has to be above the forum list?
Right now, people don't know to scroll down to even see the forum topic
list. I find that extremely counter productive to a forum. Not that I
haven't said that before, and not that others haven't said the very same
thing. But since we're talking about things like the codex and FAQs and all
that mess, why not put links to those things, including the sticky or even a
page with the forum rules on it, before the list of forum topics? Why does
it HAVE to be a list that long of recent posts? Why does it have to be
recent posts, and not just a "Must Reads" TOC? I don't understand where the
aversion to making changes comes from... We're peddling backwards on this,
and most of the other topics here, and there's no valid reason for it.

Everyone knows that the most valuable real estate on any web site or page is
"above the fold"... On my 17 inch monitor at 1024 resolution, the forum
topic list is way below it.
I agree that there are important things that anyone who's a first timer to
the forums should know. But is one of those things "IE sucks" or "Where do I
get this?" ?? I don't think so... it's the rules, it's the FAQs we've been
talking about, it's the "Step back and take a deep breath before you come in
here and panic (and most likely annoy people because you haven't read what
we think is important for you to read beforehand)" type stuff we need people
to see FIRST. Not a list of recent topics.

This is a change that has been suggested and I am absolutely opposed to.
Because it's a significant change and I'm not just being a difficult SOB
I'll try and explain why.

We have had sticky posts for a long time. We all know they are there to
convey frequently needed information. In the case of the rules they are
there to tell people how we expect them to act. They are a different colour.
They never move. They are referred to often by those people answering
questions. Read that last sentence again. They are sticky, they are coloured
differently and people still do not read them or they miss them.

And you want the forums _above_ the stickies?

How are people going to see them there?
An excellent request and one I have asked for before too is a clear signpost
for users to create a new post. Right now it is not intuitive.
_Where_ that signpost goes is up for discussion but the fact people don't
know where to post is not - IMO - because they can't find the forums but it
is because the scroll down-click-scroll down stuff is confusing. Since when
is moving the forum list going to help that?

All I can see moving the forums up will do is have regular helpers screaming
at people for not using the now hidden sticky posts. You think it's bad now,
it can only get worse.

There you go. That's why I think moving them will make forum life worse.
