I have no idea why that is so, although I know that you can use the SVN
tags instead, if you really needed to get a copy of one of the releases:

svn export http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.0.2 wordpress
                                                        ^
                                                        ^
                                                    or whatever
