Michael spoke a little out of turn, perhaps. There are still discussions
awaiting decisions and documentation updating to be done by Carthik, the
master of the Codex ;-). He will be back soon and can address all of
these issues.
Michael B, I know you are new to the documentation team, but you can
browser through past discussions on the archives listed at the bottom of
this email. There will see some of the past discussions we've had about
protecting the rights of the contributors and other copyright issues.
Again, book or no book, we need to put our energies into filling in the
gaps in the documentation. As familiar as I am with the Codex, the holes
are big enough to drive a truck through and it is certainly in no way
ready for "prime time book", even as a condensed help book. And the
decision to make it into a book is one that has to be made by Matt, not
by "just anyone".
Such a discussion should also involve others on the Documentation team,
many of whom are on vacation, so tabling this until Fall when others are
present also might be a good idea.
I'm not stopping the process, just wanting to make sure that everyone is
involved in the process. Anyone can write a book on WordPress, though
using the Codex without adequate and comprehensive permissions from all
the "right folks" would really piss a lot of people off, something I'd
like to avoid, and one has been written in German. As for the
convenience of a printed book, more and more people are looking for
books in digital form, so the future conversion of the WordPress Codex
to pdf and such is something of greater value to more people. I,
personally, read my books on my hand held computer, and I read alot, and
haven't bought a paperback book in almost three years. I've paid for
digital books, though. ;-)
Also, work is underway to connect the Codex more intimately with the
Support Forum. This will bring a lot of changes and I'm anxious to see
where this leads.
