When a comment comes in it submits its data to the spam service, which 
then runs a number of checks tests on it and compares it to its list of 
(literally) hundreds of thousands of spams.

It returns back a thumbs up or down.

If the service is down or unreachable it doesn't change the moderation 
value of the comment.

The secret sauce is a team of highly trained monkeys who can swat spam 
with their tails while typing.
