 Reading through #206 I decided to update the patch, it now works as a
 plugin.  The only change I had to make to the core code was to add a new
 filter to translation.php to filter the file name before using it.

 This will avoid any compatibility issues as the default behaviour is
 maintained unless an admin makes a choice to use the slug format.
