 I just committed the patch that adds the filter. Maybe some people
 disagree with it but I waited to commit this for almost 9 months.

 I was thinking about to make the default value depend on the user role.
 For example translators will not see the references but validators do. I
 guess this logic is something WordPress.com could integrate and it works
 great without the need for a user option.
