Tamil is currently listed as two variants in locales.php,

 Tamil (India)]
 Tamil (Sri Lanka)]

Granted, the wp-locales are different, but they're using the same ISO
codes (ta/tam), which feels wrong to me, aside from potential deeper
conflicts in code. Also despite the fact that Tamil (India) hasn't been
maintained/used thus far, it has been now
contributors-for-tamil-i/ requested], which could or could not open a can
 of worms.

I'm also not sure about the $ta and $ta_lk variables names.
