 I'm attaching a new version of the patch that blends the work in the
 earlier patch with the work that @imath did in the bp-rewrites plugin.
 It's surprisingly straightforward. I will also attach a screenshot of the
 proposed basic admin setting form that allows the admin to set every BP
 area to private or to choose specific components to protect. Please give
 it a try and let me know how it can be improved. There are some @TODOs in
 the patch to remind me to think about things, so if you have thoughts on
 those items, please let me know.
