Comment:

 I see this is something we've modified during the 10.0.0 dev cycle in
 [13103] see:
 https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/13103/trunk/src/bp-
 groups/classes/class-bp-groups-group.php

 Before this change we were using a more straightforward query to get the
 count, so I believe there shouldn't be any downside with potential
 filters/meta data there.
