 Hi,

 The plugin which is including the WP Classic Editor on the front-end needs
 to add/set the bp-mentions scripts to make it work.

 We are doing so for the WP Classic Editor we are using for the Private
 Messages component, see the following screen capture:

 This is not a BuddyPress issue.
