 @imath Wow - thanks for putting this patch together.

 I notice that it causes significant changes in the way that the WordPress
 First Name & Last Name fields sync with BuddyPress. Thanks for the early
 heads-up. I'm going to need some time to digest what the implications are
 for [https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-xprofile-wp-user-sync/ BP XProfile
 WP User Sync] but I'm looking forward to retiring that plugin in favour of
 this functionality.
