 [attachment:"7856.2.diff"] is an update of [attachment:"7856.diff"] that
 removes `Object.assign()` (I forgot that it's ES2015+ only). I've reviewed
 the approach more generally and I think it's a good one, so I'm going to
 go ahead and commit it. That way, I can apply the same thing to the
 activity directory filters, and we can have ourselves a pretty significant
 cookie win for 4.0.
