 @ninjew Thanks for posting the detailed thoughts here.

 As described in the bpdevel post linked by @r-a-y above, I did pretty
 extensive searches of the wordpress.org repo and GitHub at the time that
 we made the group query changes, but obviously this search only returned
 items that are listed in one of those two places :)

 The backward compatibility break is unfortunate, but unavoidable, as we
 needed to make fairly extensive changes to the query format to make things
 work. See #5451. I believe that the filter in 2.7 has enough information
 to do what you're trying to do, but please let us know if it's unclear how
 that should work.
