 I used the changeset above to close this ticket. The discussion above is
 mainly architectural, so I think it's appropriate to mark the current
 ticket fixed, and to handle regressions and other issues in separate
 tickets.

 Thanks for playing along, everyone. I think this is the biggest internal
 mod we've ever made to Modern BuddyPress (at least since BP_Component),
 and I think we've pulled it off pretty nicely.
