Comment:

 I think the behavior you listed is correct in my eyes, but could use some
 other feedback from the team.

 If you click on the "You have 3 new messages" link, it just takes you to
 your private message inbox, but you technically haven't read each
 individual message yet.

 If you want to mark unread notifications as read in bulk, you can do so on
 your Notifications page by selecting each item and then selecting "Mark
 read" under the "Bulk Actions" dropdown menu.
