 the last one `/ABSPATH/uploads`

 should be `/ABSPATH/wp-content/uploads`

 i think you made a mistake copying the path. I've rechecked my script an
 i'm getting on my local dev :

 /ABSPATH/wp-content/uploads/avatars/1 is an existing dir and rights are:
 /ABSPATH/wp-content/uploads/avatars/1 : 511,
 /ABSPATH/wp-content/uploads/avatars : 511,
 /ABSPATH/wp-content/uploads : 511
