 I tried installing BuddyPress on another site on a different (Linux)
 server and, while I didn't have this exact problem I had a similar one.  I
 could upload a file, it didn't throw that error message, it created a file
 and a thumbnail, it let me crop the image, but after clicking "finish" the
 avatar/photo did not appear on the group.
