 Thanks for your feedback johnjamesjacoby

 `wp_delete_file()` looks promising :) Although as far as i can see it's
 like a shortcut to `@unlink()` having a filter just before.

 I'm going to split the last patch into smaller organized parts and will
 commit them in a few hours today, leaving this ticket open for further
 iterations.
