 Reason is wp_update_user() is now doing a check on the user_email argument
 of the `$userdata` array passed. I think it should check if this field is
 set see [https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/32684 32684].

 But if i'm wrong, we might need to edit `bp_core_activate_signup()`
