 As good as the current GIF is, it is not representative of the @mentions
 feature's appearance out of the box. We don't want to tell fibs. :)

 The expected appearance of the 2.1 @mentions feature can be seen in the
 screenshots I've added to this ticket previously, and if you're somehow
 getting it looking totally different without making any changes, then
 that's an important bug we need to fix fairly urgently.

 I don't have a HiDPI monitor so cannot record a GIF of the appropriate
 quality. We're getting super close to 2.1 and it would be very awesome if
 we get the GIF re-made, but if unfortunately it doesn't happen, I'm
 content to live with shipping 2.1 with no images.
