Comment:

 2. Accessibility issues - can't rely on colour, background etc. So imo
 numbers for unread only is a good decision. We can display extra info on a
 thread page.
 3. The same as gmail (as you are referring to it earlier) - author,
 subject and date are all bold there too.
 4. Actually that is in the core already and in the other place, was just
 hidden due to a bug. Patched in #4531
