 Yes, heartbeat candidate, but for now it should only be implemented on the
 messages page itself - we should be careful about using heartbeat
 extensively through the front-end UI, as it can potentially cause resource
 issues. (Eg there was a ticket requesting heartbeat-like functionality for
 the notification count in the admin bar, which is a nice idea, but would
 require pings to happen constantly on every single page for every logged
 in user.)
