 No, this is unacceptable. The fact that it's not possible to do what
 you're asking is a failure of our API.

 I'm afraid I don't really understand what you're describing with the
 autoincrement stuff. What we really need here is unit tests that
 demonstrate the failure, so we'll have something to build against.
