 This approach reminds me of what Justin Tadlock did with users and
 taxonomies:

 Of course, users are not a post type, but Justin used a fake post type to
 use the existing taxonomy API.

 I followed a similar approach with activity hashtags.  However, do we like
 faking a post type in order to take advantage of the taxonomy API?
