 Okay, I dug into bp-activity-filters.php and removed the patch offered by
 ninnypants
 (https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/attachment/ticket/4680/4680.1.diff),
 which wasn't in my 1.9.2 install and mentions display correctly again.

 Emails are not going out though.

 If I put the patch back in, the problem reappears on reload of the page.
