 boonebgorges - regarding a role based approach to registration being
 dependent on [http://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/5121/ 5121] -
 could a less sophisticated approach be to assign the WP role 'subscriber'
 to all non-activated users? Once these users activate their account they
 become upgraded to role 'contributor'. According to the WP codex,
 subscribers have just read access which is what we'd want for non-
 activated users: http://codex.wordpress.org/Roles_and_Capabilities

 Regarding the member being prompted to upload an avatar after logging in
 for the first time, would the prompt take the form of a template notice
 announcement? Or perhaps a redirect to the change-avatar page itself? I
 think this would be a quick win but as you mention, new user experience
 could still be improved quite a lot beyond that.
