Comment:

 I definitely think this is plugin territory; follow the recommendation I
 noted in [https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3517#comment:1
 comment 1].

 Also, this issue only occurs with bp-default.  With
 [http://codex.buddypress.org/theme-compatibility/ theme compatibility in
 1.7], we will not have to worry about sidebar issues as those decisions
 will be up to the site admin and theme authors.
