Comment:

 In an older rendition of BP.org, there was a FB wall-like functionality
 where a logged-in user could post something directly on a displayed user's
 page.

 When that post was made, it would prefix the @username to mention the
 displayed user.

 Definitely plugin-territory and I believe Brajesh already created such a
 plugin.
