 I like this but it feels more like theme + plugin as opposed to
 'BuddyPress core' to me.  I'd personally love to see more bolt on plugin /
 theme combinations showing different flavours of BuddyPress so like the
 base idea.  Maybe a demo site / series of sites could be even a route for
 this.

 Perhaps it's more a community effort similar to what we did with the
 Status theme though or are doing with the new UI.  I'd lean to having it
 as a community thing though and release on wp.org or through Github.  I'd
 be happy to be part of a community effort if it was being released back to
 the community and open to both front and back end contributions.

 If you want to do it partner style, perhaps teaming up with a developer is
 the way to go outside of core at least for a one proof of concept?
 Commons in a box is a great example of this.  Maybe float this idea on
 Buddypress.org see if you can get some interest there?
