Comment:

 I think the neatest solution for this would be to add a parameter to
 bp_get_member_profile_data() to specify what group to look in to pull the
 named data from. This avoids possibly breaking backwards compatibility for
 this very specific use case.

 Please open a separate ticket (if you haven't already) about special
 characters. Thanks.
