 No further thoughts, though I agree that this is important functionality.
 However, the fact remains that there is a ton of work to be done to make
 it feasible - probably, in fact, an entire rewrite of the xprofile
 component.

 For the time being, please just use the BP Better Directories plugin. If
 you have suggestions on how that plugin could be improved, please open
 issue tickets, or send pull requests. It's possible that the plugin will
 serve as the basis for any feature of this sort in BP core.
