Comment:

 BuddyPress made a change in 1.6 to validate usernames against WordPress'
 [https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/validate_username
 validate_username()] function.

 Apparently, that function allows spaces.

 I can see how this is a regression from v1.5; I'm going to see if the
 other devs have a problem with adding back the space check.
